He's been where
they're going.
Long before Kickstart Sports, one of our own executive directors was the athlete making the leap, and that changes how we work with every athlete we represent today.
Before Yinka Ajibola was building Kickstart Sports, he was doing exactly what every athlete we represent is trying to do: earning a spot, an ocean away from home, on a college roster that owed him nothing. His development year took him to Campbellsville University in Kentucky, a first taste of American college soccer and everything that comes with it. A new country, a new system, a level of competition he had to catch up to fast.
In the summer of 2014, he took the next step and attended one of the biggest collegiate athletic tryouts in the country, held in Florida and attended by players from all around the world. The trial paid off. Yinka walked away with 13 scholarship offers, weighed on both athletic and academic merit, from schools across the United States.
He chose Mount Mercy University in Iowa, where he played center forward for the Mustangs from 2014 to 2017, the position that asks the most of a young player under pressure, judged only on what he does the moment the ball finally arrives. He finished his collegiate career there and graduated with a BA degree.
In 2015, that Mount Mercy team did something the program had never done before. It clinched a spot in the NAIA National Playoffs in Delray Beach, Florida, still a program-defining season in the school's history. Four years of early mornings, long bus rides and finishing runs like it taught Yinka exactly what it costs an athlete to get there, long before he started helping others make the trip.
This journey started small: alone, after school, training in our family compound in Ilorin, Nigeria, with nothing but the discipline my parents gave me. That discipline carried me through high school, where a recommendation from Nigeria's Sports Minister opened the door to the United States. Who would have thought?
My mantra has always been ‘Impossible is Nothing,’ but the game never came before my education. Balance mattered as much as ambition. This was the opportunity of a lifetime, and I took it with both hands.
